Fatigue is a very common health complaint in most of the industrialized countries. In the USA, around 20% of Americans experience excessive fatigue, that is enough to interfere with their normal life. Fatigue manifests itself by weariness, tiredness, lethargy, exhaustion and is generally defined as a feeling of lack of energy and motivation. It is not the same as drowsiness, but the desire to sleep may accompany fatigue. Lots of people feel tired all the time, feel like sleeping after lunch break. They feel extremely low on energy throughout the day or even at night. Here are a few common sense approaches to deal with fatigue.

Fatigue is a symptom, rather than a specific disease or disorder. People who are fatigued feel tired all the time in both body and mind. A person suffering from fatigue has slowed reflexes and reduced function in daily life. Excessive fatigue is also a known risk factor in workplace and car accidents. Fatigue can be triggered from a variety of causes such as undiagnosed medical conditions, unhealthy lifestyle choices, workplace issues, emotional concerns and stress. It can also be caused by a number of factors working in combination. Many diseases and disorders can trigger fatigue, including flu, anemia, sleep disorders, tuberculosis, hepatitis, chronic pain, heart and lung problems. Malnutrition, obesity and vitamin deficiency can also rouse fatigue. 

Below are a few common sense ways to boost your energy levels.

  1. Exercise a little
    The last thing one might consider doing when tired is exercising. However, many studies have shown that physical activity can boost energy levels. Exercise can really improve vigor. People who are active have a great sense of self confidence. It is always a good idea to chose some type of exercise that can combine both fun and physical activity. As an example, if you enjoy dancing, you should consider joining a dance class, where you can get a little bit of sweat and have fun at the same time.
  2. Drink a little more water.
    Dehydration can take away energy and impair physical performance. Dehydration is also known to decrease alertness and concentration.
  3. Get an extra hour of sleep
    Lack of sleep is one of the main causes of daytime fatigue. It also increases the risk of accidents. Going to bed early and getting an extra hour of sleep can really boost your energy levels.
  4. Become more aware of your body clock
    Some people get boost of energy in the morning. Others are more night awls and will be more productive later in the day. These differences in energy patterns are determined by brain structure and genetics. So, they can be tough to change.

  5. Lose extra weight
    Losing extra weight can be a very powerful energy booster. Even small reduction in body fat can improve mood, vigor and quality of life.

  6. See your physician
    If none of the approaches above work, then you need to see a doctor. Sometimes it is even better to start visiting your physician to rule out any health problems.

Fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical exertion, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. However, it can also be a nonspecific sign of a more serious psychological or physical disorder. If fatigue is not relieved by enough sleep, good nutrition, or low-stress environment, an evaluation by a doctor is advised. Because fatigue is a common complaint, sometimes a potentially serious case may be overlooked, leading to a more severe illness.
